Learning to Photograph Forests
Forests are among the most complex places to photograph. As someone who looks for simplicity in my images, the visually chaotic nature of forests makes them challenging for me to find the kind of compositions I'm usually drawn to. Last December I spent a week in the forests of the Pacific North West at the end of my US road trip with @hougaard_malan trying to learn how to do it.

    Nice video. As for....do you need FF high MP for landscapes over Fujifilm smaller sensor....I don't necessarily need FF (don't use anything more than 24 MP) but I prefer it when doing more critical professional work for agencies. In that respect, I usually shoot medium format film when I'm being REALLY nit-picky and just transfer to disc. I just love the Fujifilm system along side my Nikons. They make a great paring...added benefit of using Nikkor glass on the XT 2. I don't think I will ever change this paring and when I want to travel really light, I just carry the Fuji with 2 or 3 lenses. Thank you much for your videos. I must, that's...MUST get over to England and Scotland (my mother's ancestral home) and shoot tons of beautiful scenics. Keep up the good work. I'll look you up when I get there.

    Fuji and Nikon make excellent cameras and lenses. I started shooting Nikon 35mm SLR cameras in the late 1960s. Over decades, I shot Nikon F, F2, F3, F4, EM, N70, and N2000 with an inventory of two-dozen Nikon manual focus prime lenses. In the digital age, I shot Fuji S5 Pro APS-C digital SLR with five Nikon auto focus zoom lenses and my inventory of prime lenses. More recently, I started using Fuji X-Pro2 APS-C digital mirrorless with five fast Fuji auto focus prime lenses and two fast Fuji auto focus zoom lenses.

    While not my favorite lens, the 16-80 is by far my most used lens. This in spite of a couple of weaknesses. Wide open not so sharp, but one notch below 5.6 is / distortion at full wide angle can mess with shots of people on the periphery and be difficult to fix. I use it for performance b&w - perfect range. Great lens.

    Thank you for the video. Rearranging by camera bag and deciding which lenses to include for landscape outings. I normally shoot a lot of portraits and events which like to have faster f/2.8 zooms and even faster primes. Do f/4 lenses work for landscape or do the two lenses need to be f/2.8 zooms? You really didn’t cover this issue or I missed it in the video. Take care.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford 12 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment. For landscapes you almost never need a fast aperture unless you're shooting astro or aurora. f4 lenses are fine, because you'lll almost certainly close them down a few stops to where you get better optical performance and more depth of field.

    I have been using the GFX 50 Sii and I can honestly say it's a fantastic landscape camera if you don't want the hundred megapixels and honestly 50 is enough. Check out that body. It is so good for landscape photography. It is very slow focusing for pretty much everything else but it allows you to get into the GFX system with the beautiful full frame sensor, in fact that sensor is better in lowlight than the 100. I'm about to the 100s ii. But all I know is once I started using this system for my landscape photography my jaw the ground when I first saw the files on the screen. I just could not believe the level of detail was that possible. It almost felt like cheating. I was never a person to pixel peep but now I actually enjoy pixel peeping to see what this amazing system can create. Definitely keen on the 100s ii

      No, these were taken with a range of lenses, mostly the Fuji XF10-24mm...I don't thank any of them were shot with the Laowa. If you're looking for a light and small ultra wide angle for your Sony I would seriously recommend the Sigma 10-18mm f2.8. I've switched to it and have been really impressed. It's very small and light, has autofocus and performs better than the Laowa (which vignettes quite badly at f2.8).

    What I understand from your recent whats-in-my-bag videos, you carry the 16-80 as well. Considering you carry the sigma 10-18 and fuji 70-300, did you start missing the mid range focal lengths?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford 16 днів тому

      The issue is that with the Sigma I now miss the 18-24 range that I had with the 10-24, and with the 70-300mm, I now miss the 55-70 range that I had before. So rather than having a gap between 24 and 55 (focal lengths I rarely used), the gap is now 18- 70mm, which is much larger and includes focal lengths I use a lot.

    How is the GFX system compared to the X system for landscape image quality? I currently have a GFX 100s as well and is thinking about complementing it with a system built around X-T5 which has more and cheaper lens options. I’m not a professional photographer so if the X-T5 system works well for me, I would sell my GFX system.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford 16 днів тому

      I can't really answer that without being really subjective...different people look for different things in image quality and it really depends on what you feel content with personally. The GFX has better image quality, it's undeniable...the resolution and clean files are pretty much unparalleled by any system, but that doesn't mean the XT5 isn't good. Whether it's good enough depends on what you're happy with. For myself I'm happy using both systems, and never feel as though the XT5 lets me down in image quality in any way

      @KeeeeenW 16 днів тому

      @@AndyMumford Thank you so much for replying! I asked this question because there were a lot of hypes around the X-T5 and I thought the image quality would be close to full frame or even digital medium format. I have done some research on my own and it looks like GFX still has better image quality. Thanks for confirming this as well! I guess the reason for X-T5 would be weight/size, as you mentioned in a few videos, as well as better lens selection.

    Great breakdown. I canceled my order earlier today for the x100vi and ordered this camera. The wait for the x100vi is just ridiculous and feel this one will meet my needs better, especially with video. I've a diehard Canon user, but have been wanting a Fuji camera for awhile now and can't wait for it's arrival next week.

    What a great video! It was great seeing how you approached a new environment and thinking about how I would approach the locations you found. Never shot in a forest, either. One idea that came to mind with the stream you found and the lack of a focal object being a real problem. I thought that maybe getting low and wide, and using the water as a base or platform with the branches and sky opening upward instead of all objects converging mid-frame might be interesting. Could also look extremely hokey. Did you try any odd angles like this in your forest photography, and if so, did they come out well? That shot at 12:30 is just beautiful!

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford 19 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. I think getting low to the river...the river would have been an awfully large area of empty space. If it was fast enough flowing to do something with a long exposure that might have worked, but I think it would have just been a large empty dark space at the bottom of the frame

      @sciez22 19 днів тому

      @@AndyMumford Ah that's a good point. From the high angle there were a bunch of interesting reflections that made the water look brighter but I'm guessing they would have went away down low? Damn physics 😁

    Hey Andy,I've been meaning to carry a 55-200 with xt4 and an 18-55, in the same f stop camera pouch for a backpacking trip, but I was wondering what should I use to seperate the primary camera body and lens and the second lense to avoid constant friction or collision.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford 19 днів тому

      I've got one of the foam dividers that come with f stop ICUs separating the two lenses. it doesn't attach to anything, but works to stop the lenses banging together
